Undermining The Election
The Democrat rallying cry for the last 3 years has been the shibboleth that Donald Trump has been trying to “UNDERMINE THE 2020 ELECTION.” (Heavens, no!). He also has been portrayed as trying to incite an “insurrection.” How they can POSSIBLY make this claim when his EXACT words (as shown in a TRANSCRIPT of his January 6th speech) were: “I know that everyone here will soon be marching over to the Capitol building to peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard” (The key words being “peacefully and patriotically.”) is beyond comprehension. None-the-less, the Democrats have tried again and again to portray Trump’s speech as seditious and his refusal to accept the election of Joe Biden as trying to “undermine the election.” They claim that Trump committed a political “mortal sin” that was unprecedented in American politics. But, ladies and gentlemen, a close look at America’s recent history, tells a different tale.
When history is scrutinized, the records show that FOR DECADES, DEMOCRATS HAVE REFUSED TO ACCEPT THE RESULTS OF ELECTIONS THEY LOST! Don’t believe me? Let’s go take a look.
It turns out that Democrats have cast doubt on the legitimacy of EVERY presidential election they lost since the defeat of Michael Dukakis in 1988.
For years, Democrats have refused to accept the results of the 2000 presidential election were George W. Bush defeated Al Gore in an admittedly tight race. Al Gore repeatedly claimed that he was the real winner of the 2000 election. In fact, Gore petitioned the Florida State Elections Committee to preform endless voter recounts, changing the counting techniques, thereby violating Florida election law which required the cessation of tabulations and certification of the results by November 15. He sued the state to prevent the statutorily required certification and to continue the recounts which did resume on Nov 22. This then went before the Florida Supreme Court that found in favor of Gore. It should be noted, however, that, although NO justice on the Florida Supreme Court at the time was a Republican appointee, three of them concluded that the recount that Vice President Gore wanted was unconstitutional as an “Equal Protection violation” when the manual ballot-counters used different procedures to examine identical ballots and count them differently. (By the way, although you almost never here this acknowledged, there actually WAS a recount in all counties where the Bush margin of victory was less than 1% as required by Florida state law. The recount reduced Bush’s lead from 537 to 327, but STILL found Bush the winner!). The continued unconstitutional recounts thereby forced Bush to sue Gore to stop them. This suit (the famous Bush v. Gore), as everyone knows, went to the Supreme Court which found for Bush. In a 5–4 per curiam decision (a group finding as opposed to individual opinions), the Court ruled, strictly on equal protection grounds, that the recount be stopped. Specifically, it held that the use of different standards of counting in different counties violated the Equal Protection Clause of the U.S. Constitution. The vote was then duly certified and Bush won the presidency. None-the-less, despite a clear and binding decision by the Supreme Court, Gore continued to claim that he won the election. That sounds suspiciously like “undermining,” doesn’t it? No one, however, seems to have accused Gore of such!
In fact, an unabashed Al Gore brought his accusations up again in 2016 during a rally for Hillary Clinton and did not refute chants from the audience saying he won. Further, in 2017, Gore repeated his accusations again and even implied that Jeb Bush (Governor of Florida at the time of the 2000 election) “may have had something” to do with him losing Florida. Not only did Gore NOT gather opprobrium for his continued “undermining” but he continued to have support by many Democrats including Bill & Hillary Clinton, Jimmy Carter, Terry McAuliffe, Jamie Raskin (D-MD), Jessie Jackson, Democrat Chairwoman Debbra Wasserman Schultz, Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX), James Clyburn (D-SC), Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX), Maxine Waters (D-CA) and many other Democrats. Where are the cries of “undermining” on all of this?
And, the election in 2004 was no different than 2000, with Democrats once again denying the results of an election they did not agree with, in this case the clear victory of George W. Bush over a stone faced and uninspiring John Kerry. In 2005, then-Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and then-Rep. Stephanie Tubbs (D-OH) filed an objection to the certification of Ohio’s electoral college votes. 31 House Democrats voted to reject electoral votes from the state of Ohio, including Reps. Bennie Thompson (D-MS), Barbra Lee (D-CA), Maxine Waters (D-CA), Raúl Grijalva (D-AZ), James Clyburn (D-SC), and now-Senator Ed Markey (D-MA). In 2005, House Democrats authored a report claiming there were “‘numerous, serious election irregularities” in Ohio’s presidential vote. John Kerry raised questions about the election on multiple occasions, claiming that many voters were “denied their right to vote; too many who tried to vote were intimidated.” Sounds like quite a bit of Democrat “undermining,” doesn’t it?
And, in 2017, seven House Democrats tried to object to the 2016 election victory of Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton and 67 Democrats boycotted the inauguration, with many “claiming Trump’s victory was illegitimate.” Hillary Clinton repeatedly questioned the legitimacy of the election and claimed the election was stolen from her. In September 2017, Hillary Clinton said she would not “rule out” questioning the legitimacy of the 2016 election. In March 2019, Clinton smiled in agreement when former State Sen. Hank Sanders (D-AL) said the election was stolen from her. In May 2019, Clinton herself said the 2016 election was “stolen” from her. In September 2019, Clinton dismissed Trump as an “illegitimate president” and said “he knows” he stole the 2016 presidential election. In October 2019, Clinton said again that Trump knows that he is “an illegitimate president.” In December 2019, Clinton nodded in agreement that she won the election. In July 2020, Clinton said Trump is scared for Americans to see “how illegitimate his victory” was. In October 2020, Clinton again claimed that the 2016 presidential election was not conducted legitimately. LOTS AND LOTS of undermining! Where are the calls of “undermining” here?
Fortunately, there were a number of Republican victories that did go unchallenged: Richard Nixon over George McGovern (1972), Ronald Reagan over Jimmy Carter (1980), Ronald Reagan over Walter Mondale (1984), George H.W. Bush over Michael Dukakis (1988). All of these were, of course, LANDSLIDE Republican victories, impossible to challenge. There was ample “undermining,” however, with ALL the rest.
