Bad, Bad, Alvin Bragg: Baddest Cat Under The City Flag
Apologies to “LeRoy Brown” composer, the late Jim Croce.
Now, I don’t know whether or not Alvin Bragg is the baddest “Cat” under the City Flag, but I do know that he is certainly the worst District Attorney.
Bragg’s case against former President Trump has been denounced by every American political commentator with the possible exception of Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Even famous “never Trumpers” like Mitt Romney and Jeb Bush have decried Bragg’s indictment. Professor Jonathan Turley (George Washington School of Law) has called Bragg’s case against Trump “pathetic.” Professor Alan Dershowitz (Harvard Law School alum) has said that “Alvin Bragg has a better chance of serving time himself than Donald Trump.”! In addition to being flimsy and wrong headed, many observers have called Bragg’s indictment DANGEROUS.
Perhaps it’s not surprising that Bragg should be the animus behind this dangerous legal charade. Don’t let Bragg’s Harvard diploma fool you (a Harvard degree just isn’t, apparently, what it used to be); this man has no understanding of, nor respect for, the law. On his third day as the Manhattan District Attorney, in January, 2021, he announced that his office would no longer prosecute “low-level” offenses such as subway-fare evasion, resistance to arrest, or prostitution unless they were part of an accompanying felony charge. Remember, under both Mayors Rudi Giuliani and Michael Bloomberg, “low level” enforcement (sometimes referred to as “broken windows policing”) was proven to radically reduce overall crime in New York City. Bragg, however, will have none of that. Bragg’s policies, together with the “cashless bail” policies and cancellation of “stop and frisk” procedures under former mayor Bill De Blasio have resulted in the soaring rise in crime in New York City. And, it’s honest law abiding citizens that bear the brunt of such perversion of justice. And, to understand just how bereft of legal logic Bragg’s mind is, consider the following: On April 1, parking garage attendant, Moussa Diarra, confronted an individual acting suspiciously in his garage. The suspect, Charles Rhodie, had been peering into automobile windows and was carrying a sack. When confronted by Diarra, Rhodie produced a gun and then SHOT Diarra twice, after which Diarra was able to wrestle the gun away from Rhodie and then shoot him in the chest. Rhodie subsequently died in the hospital and Bragg then CHARGED DIARRA WITH MURDER! He formally charged Diarra despite the fact that he had been SHOT by Rhodie. TWICE. Later, in the face of massive uproar, including some from his own colleagues, Bragg, under duress, dropped the charges. But THIS, ladies and gentlemen, is the legal genius behind the Trump indictment.
Bragg decided to proceed with the Trump indictment, which vaguely references violation of election campaign laws, despite the fact that past Federal Elections Committee chairman, Bradly Smith, who looked very closely into the matter, DECLINED to indict. Mr. Smith said recently, on Fox, that he didn’t bring an indictment because “there wasn’t a crime.” The FEC, by the way, is IN CHARGE of election integrity.
And Bragg’s actions, unfortunately, are not unique to the office of the District Attorney of New York. The Attorney General of New York State, the hyper partisan Democrat, Letitia James, after 3 and a half years, is still trying to find some way of indicting Trump on bank fraud charges. In DC, special counsel Jack Smith is trying to assemble a case accusing Mr. Trump of mishandling classified documents (similar “mishandling” has also been found to have taken place, by the way, by the titular president, Joe Biden). In Georgia, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis is trying hard to portray Trump’s conversation with the “never Trump” Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger as if he had asked the Secretary to fraudulently tamper with the 2020 vote totals. (Note: Trump asked Raffensperger to FIND 10,000 votes, that Trump suspected were fraudulently discounted, NOT to create 10,000 fraudulent votes). All of the above legal mischief was meant to create a “tsunami” of legal challenges that would render Mr. Trump’s 2024 candidacy asunder.
In my next essay I will share thoughts on the ramifications all of this.
+So much news that will never be in the news. The truth will come out. Soon I hope.
