An Open Letter To The Yankees

Dear Mr. Cashman,

I have been a dedicated Yankee Fan my entire life. I count being in Yankee Stadium for Reggie Jackson’s third consecutive home run on three consecutive pitches in game six of the 1977 World Series against the Dodgers as one of the highlights of my life.

It is with great sadness, therefore, that I must declare that I am no longer a fan. The shameful “taking a knee” by the Yankees during our national anthem is one of the great disappointments of my life. A shared love for our country, the most prosperous and equitable nation in history, and the third nation on earth to ban slavery, is the ONE value all Americans should share. Without love for our great country, no progress can be made. Sympathy for the tragic death of George Floyd is, of course, understandable and proper, but to use this incident as a pretext to disparage the United States of America is simplistic, unjustified and reprehensible.

I will no longer be able to watch Yankee games, listen to Yankee broadcasts or attend (when it become permissible to do so) Yankee games until such time as the team ceases to disrespect our nation. I would hope that a way can be found to affirm America’s commitment to equal justice under the law without a display of disdain for our country. I believe that such an accomodation is possible, and I would suggest the the Yankee organization look into this in earnest. Continued respect for the team will not be predicated on how many home runs Aron Judge hits or how many wins Gerrit Cole gets, but rather how the team responds to this challenge. I have discussed my concerns with many people and I can say with certainty that I am not alone on this. There are many who feel as I do.
