Premonition

In 1936 the surrealist painter, Salvador Dalì, painted a masterpiece with the unlikely name: “Soft Construction With Boiled Beans.” The painting is most important, however, because Dalì subtitled it: “Premonition of Civil War.”

That was just six months before the Spanish Civil War did, in fact, break out. The painting shows some type of dismembered human being tearing itself apart. It was and is the perfect visual metaphor  for what a civil war is and what it does.

Now, about premonitions, I have a similar eerie feeling about the United States on the eve of election 2024. Our extremely divided populace (fostered, primarily, by the desperate Democrat party’s incessant hyperbole and demonization of not just Trump (Hitler and Stalin, rolled into one!) but, essentially HALF of America as stupid anti American GARBAGE) paired with the existence of self professed violent factions such as Black Lives Matter, Antifa and “Palestinian” activists, waiting in the wings, coupled with the current administration’s abject unwillingness to control any form unrest (such as the pro Hamas rioters this past spring), looks to me like a loaded gun. If Trump wins, as I expect he will, I believe that violence is likely. And, unless the Biden-Harris administration has the guts to control the unrest, the violence could escalate to what will be, in essence, a civil war. America came very close to this during the “George Floyd riots” of 2020.  We could be there again in 2024.

Now, this is not to say that, as a consequence, America should vote for Harris. Far from it. Voting for Harris might solve the immediate problem, but the forces bringing us to this terrible precipice will only grow stronger. If these forces are unchallenged and unchecked, and we, collectively, fail to reaffirm our commitment to the rule of law and the primacy of our constitution, our country, as we have known her, will cease to exist.
