The Compassionate Wall
Opponents of a barrier wall along our Mexican border try to portray advocates of the wall as cruel and uncaring louts that haven’t a grain of human compassion. These opponents complain loud and long about “heartless” provincials that care not for their fellow man. They stand in self righteous condemnation of all those who disagree with them. But, dear readers, these people are wrong. DEAD WRONG. Our “porous” southern border is an ongoing humanitarian catastrophe, and its closure would not be cruel but rather would be an act of compassion.
Hordes of would be immigrants face unspeakable hardship along their journey to our border. Many of the travelers aren’t even from Mexico. Most are from Guatemala and Honduras. And some may even be “from” ISIS. They manage to pass into Mexico through ITS southern border, but Mexico won’t let them stay (which is pretty ironic considering Mexico’s vocal criticism of OUR immigration policies!). The migrant’s only chance for success is to cross all of Mexico one way or another to get to our border and then hope for the best.
For many, however, this journey is a nightmare. Shockingly, MANY of the migrants are CHILDREN. And, many of those children are without parents or family to protect them. Many are brutalized, and, yes, many are raped. Amnesty International estimates that the percentage of women migrants who are raped in the caravans to be EIGHTY PERCENT! Doctors Without Borders estimates that TWO OUT OF THREE migrants have been the victims of violence. Disease is rampant. It is unconscionable to let this go on, but not only have Democrats allowed this disaster to continue, they’ve actually ENCOURAGED it. Since late 2016 Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi and other Democrats, speaking at a number of different forums, told the world’s potential migrants that, in essence, “our borders are open”. As a consequence of this irresponsible and inexcusable campaign, large numbers of migrants heeded the call, and the wave of migration continued and grew larger. Once a wall is constructed, our border secured and it becomes crystal clear that our border is truly closed, these streams of bedraggled migrants will evaporate.
Aside from the caravans crossing Mexico, many other migrants attempt to cross our border solo. These migrants also face harrowing dangers. The terrain and conditions that exist along lengthy stretches of our southern border are terribly harsh. Many of the unprepared or unfortunate die in transit from heat stroke, starvation, violence and even drowning in the Rio Grande. All of this tragedy would stop if and when our wall is built and it becomes known that passage is impossible.
And those migrants that try to enter our country via traffickers and smugglers are often in grave danger as well. There have been shoot outs by rival gangs, horrible treatment by the smugglers, and sometimes horrible fatalities. Just last July, 9 illegal aliens were found dead, and 39 discovered in serious to critical condition locked in the back of a sweltering tractor trailer truck left to bake in the relentless sun of San Antonio, Texas. An identical incident occurred in 2003 with 18 dead. In both of these tragedies, the migrants were basically roasted alive. And there are unknown numbers of would be immigrants who are swindled, robbed or brutalized by unscrupulous smugglers.
Next, consider the mayhem that our porous border produces on OUR side. Between October 8th and November 11th, 2017, in an operation called “Raging Bull”, Federal agents arrested 214 members of the MS-13 gang in Los Angeles. Of the 214 arrested, ONE HUNDRED AND NINETY EIGHT were FOREIGN NATIONALS and, of those, ONLY FIVE had legal status as immigrants. (Source: Phil McCausland, NBC News, November 16, 2017). And this problem is NOT confined to Los Angeles. MS-13 continues to run amuck on Long Island, New York, and in other areas as well. Last summer there was the terrible case of two young Long Island girls that were hacked to pieces with HATCHETS AND MACHETES by MS-13 gang members as some type of vendetta while they WERE STILL ALIVE. And, MS-13 has recently announced plans to kill a policeman on Long Island to serve as a “warning”. Some have called these criminals “animals.” But that’s wrong. They’re WORSE than animals.
Then there’s the case of illegal alien Hermilo Morales in Fort Bend, Texas, who, in November of 2011, tortured and strangled student Josh Wilkerson to death. Wilkerson had given Morales a ride home from school.
And then there’s the case of illegal alien Jesus Rangle-Hernandez who, in 2015, killed four people in North Carolina, one of which had recently won a “Top Model” contest.
And then there’s the case of illegal alien Garcia Zarate (who had been deported FIVE TIMES BEFORE) who fatally shot lovely young Kathy Stienele, as she strolled the Pier 14 with her father in San Francisco.
And then there’s several cases of fatalities caused by illegal aliens driving drunk.
And then there’s the case of, well….there are really too many tragedies to even keep track of. EVERY ONE of these terrible crimes would have been prevented had there been a truly closed border with a wall to back it up.
Next, consider the problem of illegal drugs in America. It’s been well documented that our country is in the midst of a heroin epidemic, much of which comes into our country through our southern border. The human cost of this epidemic in terms of fatal overdoses, broken families and shattered lives is enormous. A border wall would cut off a huge source of this poison.
And last, consider the effect that illegal immigration has on honest hardworking American laborers. Many of these laborers lose jobs to illegal aliens that will work for close to nothing. Those Americans that do retain their jobs, however, often must accept substandard wages because of competition from the illegals. It’s hard to make a living, and even harder to provide for a family, if you’re forced to work for wages driven down by illegals.
And, what is the up side to our open boarder? Businessmen like it for the cheap labor it provides, and Democrats like it for the future democratic voters they covet. In other words illegal immigration is a windfall to the naked greed of businessmen and the Democratic Party, consequences be damned! They should be ASHAMED of themselves.
So, the liberals can claim that building a border wall is a cruel and heartless thing to do. But, they’re wrong. DEAD WRONG. Building a border wall will be a long overdue act of mercy and compassion.
My cousin just introduced me to your site. I agree with your assessment of the wall. And I look forward to reading more – whether our opinions match or not. All the best, Diane in Tucson
Thanks Diane. I endeavor to post essays that point to observations and analysis that SHOULD be plain common sense, but in today’s mixed up culture, are, apparently NOT. I’m glad you enjoyed The Compassionate Wall. Thank you for your interest!
