Playing With Children’s Lives
It is sad to think that, come March 2018, children that have lived most of their lives in the US, but were brought here illegally, will be loosing the protected status provided by Obama’s DACA (Delayed Action on Children Arrivals) presidential decree. It IS true, that the children themselves did nothing wrong and it is quite understandable that they they’re furious with their recent change in status and possible deportation. But who are the real culprits here? Hint: it’s NOT President Trump.
First, culpability must be born, in part, by the parents. They sidestepped the entire process that could have provided for LEGAL immigration. They disregarded our immigration laws and requirements by either sneaking in outright or by over staying their visas.
Now, I wouldn’t criticize any foreign national for WANTING to emigrate to the US. Despite what the legion of leftist critics in America claim, our country STILL provides a standard of living that is the envy of the world. While some immigrants may be most interested in our luxurious welfare benefits, many or most, I suspect, are looking for the same thing that my ancestors were looking for during their immigration: opportunity.
But I DO criticize the illegal immigrants, however, for not pursuing immigration LEGALLY, as my ancestors did, and as virtually ALL immigrants in the past were EXPECTED to do. We DO have laws that provide for LEGAL immigration, and we have established channels for doing just that. Now, it’s true that we have immigration quotas and legal immigration is by no means a “sure thing” or a quick thing, that is no justification for illegal entry. The poor economic conditions that cause so MANY people to want to emigrate to this country are NOT the responsibility of the United States.
Why today’s “undocumented” immigrants believe that they don’t have to BOTHER with the legal path to immigration and citizenship, and that they should somehow be “above the law” brings me to discuss the second group of culprits: Obama and the Democratic Party.
Obama’s DACA was NOT legislation at all. Never was. It was a DECREE and was never approved by Congress, which, the last time I looked, has the Constitutional responsibility to make the laws of the land. The predecessor to DACA was the “DREAM ACT” (Development Relief and Education for Alien Minors). Although this legislation doesn’t include it in its title, it did provide a path to citizenship for those brought to America ILLEGALLY. After that legislation foundered in Congress, Obama simply signed the presidential EDICT that was DACA. DACA does NOT have a path to citizenship for illegal aliens, but does allow for perpetual protection from deportation with renewal applications for such protection every two years. Obama and the Democrats KNEW that this wasn’t a permanent solution. None the less, they let it be known through diplomatic and media channels that children of undocumented aliens would be WELCOMED and PROTECTED. By drawing these children into our country without the unassailable protection that properly passed legislation would have provided, they were, in essence, PLAYING with the lives of children. Cynics among us (myself included) suspect that the ultimate motivation for such a policy was that, in conjunction with future legislation, it would have provided the shameless recruitment of legions of future reliably Democratic voters. And, as is the case MANY times in history, who are the ultimate victims? The CHILDREN, of course.
