James Comey Explained
Mr. James Comey came to Capitol Hill yesterday and proclaimed the government “innocent” of wiretapping Donald Trump last fall, when Mr. Trump was a candidate for the Presidency. As discussed in my previous essay (No Evidence, 3/20/17), however, his proclamation must be taken with a grain of salt. Over the last six months Mr. Comey’s proclamations have been SO contradictory and SO obviously self serving that his credibility is now on life support. Not only did Mr. Comey deliver a blanket denial of having any information on possible wiretapping, but he OMITTED comment on to two extremely important issues…
The first act of omission was failure to mention that the FBI has found nothing to support the accusation that Mr. Trump COLLUDED with the Russian government in any way. The way Mr. Comey worded his pronouncement made it sound like, because an investigations was ongoing, that the Trump Campaign was in cahoots with the Russians. However, according to sources on the Senate Intelligence committee, as well as several others fully familiar with the FBI’s proceedings, NOTHING has been found to suggest that the Trump Campaign had anything to do with Russian spying. Whether or not any Russian spying did occur during the campaign is, of course, a separate question, as is the motivation behind such activity. But NO ONE familiar with the investigation has learned anything to suggest that Mr. Trump had any part in it whatsoever. But Mr. Comey had nothing to say on the matter! In fact he didn’t even mention it! Since the remarks that Mr. Comey DID make were clearly ANTI Trump, it should have behooved him, in fairness, to state clearly that no sign of collusion with the Russians by Mr. Trump has been found. Period. But he DIDN’T!
The second act of omission by Mr. Comey was his complete evasion of one of the most important issues still at hand, namely: Who, in the United States government, has been leaking all the highly classified information. There have been major leaks on Mr. Trump’s cabinet appointees (General Flynn, for example), foriegn ambassadors, Mr. Trump’s tax records and other sensitive issues! Leaks of this nature are HIGHLY illegal. And, by definition MUST be coming from a person or persons WITHIN the government! I think it’s fair to say that these leaks have to be investigated as the criminal acts that they are. It’s mandatory! But, Mr. Comey gave NO indication that these leaks were being investigated at all. In fact, he gave no indication that he was even aware of the issue! Amazing!
Now, these omissions by Mr. Comey are so egregious that there must be a method to his madness! And, I believe that, indeed, there is. Mr. Comey’s glaring omissions (and, in fact, most of his behavior over the past year) have been carried out with one thing, and one thing only, in mind: job security! I think it’s abundantly clear that Mr. Comey’s omissions are deliberate. His posture is DESIGNED to be ambiguous. Why so?…By being ambiguous (and by leaving the wrongheaded accusations by Democrats to smolder), Mr. Comey positions himself in a “protected space”. Despite his terrible record and gross incompetence, he now has JOB SECURITY! After all, how can Mr. Trump fire him without looking like, at this point, he has something to hide? And, if Mr. Trump were to be perceived as having something to hide, there would be immediate calls for further inquiries, investigations, special prosecutors, impeachment, et cetera. Now despite having nerves of steel, Mr. Trump doesn’t, I believe, want to go there and get bogged down in the morass that would ensue! So Mr. Comey, despite EVERYTHING, stays in place. Talk about job security! Mr. Comey’s now got it! Pretty clever, I have to admit. Disgraceful, but clever. So, there you have it, ladies and gentlemen: Mr. James Comey explained! And you can take that to the bank!
