The Big Picture
Now that we are 6 weeks into the Donald Trump presidency, we might pause and step back a bit and reflect on what I’ll call the “big picture”.
Thinking back to March of 2016, just a year ago (boy, it seems longer than that, doesn’t it?), American politics was very different. It’s hard to believe, but just a year ago was the slow beginning of the Donald Trump juggernaut that would radically alter the political landscape of this country. And considering that not just the Presidency, but the House and the Senate and (ultimately) the Supreme Court have been entrusted to Mr. Trump and to conservative acolytes, the juggernaut was, really, nothing less than a nonviolent REVOLUTION!
And this revolution took place despite GRAVE warnings from:
1.The main stream media.
2.Academia.
3.Jeb Bush and his ilk.
4.Hollywood.
5.Madonna.
6.And many others.
And, remember, this revolution was orchestrated by a businessman that:
1. Lacked polish and tact.
2. Had no real political experience.
3. Had little to no support from his
own party.
4. Was outspent by a wile opponent
10 to 1.
5. Had poor communication skills.
6. And had a bit of a “racy” and,
perhaps, controversial past.
For this revolution to have played out the way it did (despite all of the above), there had to be an AWFUL lot wrong with the way America was being run prior to November 8th. And, indeed, there was an AWFUL lot wrong.
In retrospect, American voters realized that the path our country had been taking for the previous 8 years, was, simply, very wrong. In other words, the American voters “got it”. But, from the vantage point of a year ago, it was not at all clear that this realization would take place. There were tremendous efforts underway, by many players (in government, academia and the media), to confuse, fool and blindfold the American population. It looked like it would be very difficult for Americans to see through the tremendous amount of “blue smoke and mirrors” in play at that time. But, in the end, of course, it DID happen, and Americans did see through the smoke, and, in the last analysis, they “got it”. And once they “got it”, they soon began to entertain the notion that not just change would be necessary, but SWEEPING changes were needed.
In retrospect, therefore, we can see that, as early as March of 2016, a radical “reset” was in the offing. That much now seems clear. But, given that a radical reset was deemed necessary, the next question that immediately followed was: who would lead the revolt? That was the heart of the “big picture” as it stood early in campaign 2016.
Now, in March of 2016, I was inclined, I must confess, to favor Marco Rubio. I was also okay with Jeb Bush, John Kasich, or Scott Walker (really ANYONE but Hillary). They all seemed to me to have acceptable positions on many of the major issues facing us, and, importantly, each had, I felt, a decent chance of victory. And while Mr. Trump seemed to be correct on the important issues (immigration, security, the military, the economy and taxes) he seemed, at that point, mostly for stylistic reasons, to have a very low chance of winning. Hence my preference for Mr. Rubio, et al.
Now, of course, as 2016 played out, America was to choose Mr. Trump, a candidate pretty far down on my preference list. And, you know what? I think America made the better choice. By far.
It’s not that Mr. Rubio and brethren were not capable, very smart and very competent. They were. And, while it’s true that Mr. Trump possessed (and STILL posses) many of the failings enumerated above, he also posses, however, an abundance of an extremely important trait not found in the other candidates to the same degree. What trait? Well, I’ll call it, for want of a polite phrase, “intestinal fortitude” or “guts”. Some might chose another anatomical reference, and, of course, that works too.
So, one year later, looking now at the current widespread leftist hysteria, the CONSTANT attacks coming at Mr. Trump and his administration from the Democrats, liberals, “progressives”, the political action groups, George Soros, Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, college students, aggrieved feminists and others, I frankly don’t think the other candidates would be holding up as well. You need guts to stand up to the loud mouthed malcontents. You need guts to ignore idiotic witch hunts, of which the persecution of Mr. Jeff Sessions (for doing, basically, his JOB!) is an good example. You need guts to level accusations of governmental wiretapping in front of strong opponents with vested interests in the legislature egged on by an accusatory media. You need guts to stand before a joint session of Congress and clearly delineate your plans for radical changes in America’s government with many sworn enemies in attendance and in your face. You need guts.
And, Mr. Trump, fortunately, has them. And then some. And they have been already needed numerous times during just his first six weeks. And they will be needed again in the future. And again. And again and again and again.
So, looking at the “big picture”, from a year on, it’s obvious that America has chosen the right man for the job, and possibly the ONLY man for the job. And they have chosen wisely, indeed.
