Win One For The Gipper
>Numerous Republican Senators and Congressmen have, “boldly” and self righteously, raised their collective voices in a cacophonous chorus: “We Won’t Support Trump.” This slogan can be heard coming from the political rafters. While a small fraction of this chorus may be motivated by true moral indignation, the overwhelming majority is motivated, I believe, by the instinct for survival. Mr. Trump, they say, has become a political pariah who, unintentionally and unwittingly, will deliver the presidency, the House and the Senate to the Democrats. I’ll call this the “Armageddon” scenario. Obviously these are very valid concerns, and that scenario is, I believe, the most likely one at present. And an abhorrent one. And, if it comes to pass, it will show Mr. Trump to have caused more harm to the Republican Party AND our nation than any other single politician in American history. And that includes the severe damage done by Barack Obama and Jimmy Carter (Remember him?). We can not let this happen. The question at hand is: “Can this scenario be stopped?” And, what is the best strategy against this catastrophe.
>Trying to force Trump out is a non starter, as significant numbers of his “hard core” base would, likely, stand down, not vote, and bring on political Armageddon.
>On the other hand, the blatantly self serving exodus, now underway, will not, I believe, bring about the desired effect. NO feminist, nor any independent modern young woman, is likely to say: “Gee, Senator Sensitive has pulled away from Trump. I’m going to run right out and vote for him!” Rather, they will likely say: “What a stupid Party they were to begin with. Now it’s too little and too late!” The Republican mutiny will not, I believe, stave off Armageddon.
>The “go all out for Trump” scenario also looks shaky to me. The polls are not headed in the right direction. Double digit leads have once again opened up (in the Wall Street Journal Poll, among others). Short of a terrorist attack on a children’s hospital, the chances for a Trump victory are, at best, marginal.
>That leads me to the last, and I believe, best strategy. I’ll call this scenario: “Win one for the Gipper.” This scenario would involve Trump taking a hard look at the polls over the next couple of days, and, if he sees his chances further deteriorating, that he steps up and does the right thing: turns his candidacy over to Mike Pence. He MUST then instruct his faithful to come out in droves for Pence as well as every Republican on every ticket through out the land. He would, in effect, tell his party, and sympathetic independents, to “Go out there and win one for the Gipper.” It would resonate deeply with Americans of many political stripes. He could then claim that he started a movement that Mr. Pence will carry on. And, if Mr. Pence wins, as is likely, he could rightfully claim to be a “King Maker”, which would appear to be a best case scenario for him, given everything that’s taken place. Mr. Priebus, Mr. Gingrich, Mr. Giuliani, Mr. Eric Trump, Ms. Ivanna Trump: Please, talk to Donald. Soon. And dear readers, please send emails to the RNC and the Trump campaign. If you Google either party and add “Contact” several options will come up. This may not stop the looming cataclysm, but it’s worth a try.
